Ordinary English Greetings
I love hearing from you! That’s why I recently sent an email out to all of my email subscribers (join here) and asked them what they wanted to learn. You guys flooded my inbox with amazing suggestions. Because I want to help you guys as much as possible in your English language journey, I’m going to answering as many questions as I can via video.
This video was inspired by a student named Giacomo who wanted to know how real English is spoken by ordinary people. Even though that could lead to hundreds of answers that can’t all be learned in one lesson, I chose to highlight two expressions he could use as a greeting. Let’s watch the video and then I will explain the greetings.
So, here are the two expressions that I used to answer Giacomo’s plea for real English.
1) Hey, what’s up?
This is a standard informal greeting here in America that means, “What is new with you?” or “How are you?” The average person responds by saying, “Not much.”
2) How’s it going?
This informal greeting is mostly used to ask how a person is doing, not what a person is doing. Most people respond with, “Pretty good” or “Going great”.
I hope this helped, Giacomo! If any of you have any questions you would like for me to answer in a video lesson, you can comment below or sign up for the newsletter and email me.
