Studying at an IEP

According to research by Kaplan International, 65% of English language learners believe that the best way to learn English is by traveling to an English speaking country and taking English classes with other foreigners. I would agree that this direct form of instruction could give you a huge boost when it comes to learning English.

I have been teaching ESL at a private university in the U.S. for eight years. My students have come from all around the world to learn English and gain entrance into their field of study. It’s remarkable the improvement that a student can see when they live and take classes in an English-speaking country.

What is it like to take classes at a university-level Intensive English Program (IEP)? Just like its name suggests, it’s intense! A student attending classes at a typical IEP will receive approximately 20 hours of English instruction per week. In addition to that, most teachers in these environments assign a few hours of homework every night in order to speed up language learning. IEP students also live in an English-speaking environment, so they are surrounded by English. If they need to ask a question to a store clerk at Target, it’s in English. If they have a question to ask the bookstore worker, it will have to be a question phrased in English. All television shows are in English. Menus are in English. Street signs are in English.
