Audio Transcript of this Free English Lesson:

When I lived in Panama to study Spanish, I met many Spanish speakers who were also learning English. Many of them had excellent English, but there was one guy who stuck out in my mind as an excellent English speaker.

He had never been out of Panama before, but his English was almost perfect. I was baffled by it, and I asked him why his English was so good compared to so many of his friends — but I realized, he didn’t know himself why it was — but after observing him, I could see it’s because he asked so many questions.

Mario was always stopping us mid sentence to ask us “what we had said” or to “repeat a pronunciation” and then he would repeat it back to us. He was engaging us, not just listening but responding to what we said. He was an active learner. So, my tip of the day for learning English is to be an active learner.

Ask questions, respond to what you hear, and practice what you hear.

I’m Andrea, and this is ESL Basics.
